Finding Good Apps for kids

iPads are a great tool in the classroom, but they need to be used effectively or I think the kids see it just as a toy and not a tool!
There are lots of ways to use iPads in the classroom, in all subject areas. I wrote about how I organize them and use them here. We are not 1-to-1 so we use them mostly during workshop time, but I love reading about how teachers with more iPads use them in their classroom too!

Anyways, it can sometimes be difficult to find good apps for kids that are FREE and don't have ads. When I find out about one I love, I am going to start posting a link at my facebook page. Be sure to like my page to stay up with great apps that have gone free! There is a free app posted there now! ;)

Go check it out! :)

Finding our voice with Mo Willems

Our Mo Willems author study started as a part of our unit on How We Express Ourselves. It quickly BECAME the unit, because once we got started with him, it took us a month and a half for us to finally move on!

As the kids performed their reader's theater scripts today, I realized the greatest thing about Mo Willems' books is that every child feels successful reading an Elephant and Piggie book. In the last month and a half I have seen some of my struggling readers start to bloom. I heard it in their sweet voices today.

We had done a mini unit with Mo Willems at the beginning of the year so my kids were familiar with him and his books. We had used the Pigeon, Elephant, and Piggie to help towards the beginning of our writer's workshop so we could think about punctuation and speech bubbles.

So, in the beginning of February, when I put out a bunch of Elephant and Piggie books in the Read to Someone area, the kids were excited to start reading them. I told them to pick a character and read that character's part. Over the next couple of weeks we looked at the punctuation, the size of the print and quickly the kids began to adjust their voices and expression to match the characters. The facial expressions Mo Willems gives to his characters helped even more.

My Mo Willems' tub of books quickly disappeared into the kids bag of books and they devoured them during independent reading time. These books have certainly seen better days! ;)

Then I gave them the blank books during writing time and told the kids to write their own Elephant and Piggie books. I have never seen kids become so engrossed in their writing time. They were writing when they came to school in the mornings, during indoor recess, and dismissal time. Such creative stories and detailed expressions in their drawings. Even my kids who normally finish a book in a day with a bare bones were putting effort into their work and taking time to write a story.

oh the rage! ;)

Then during Read to Someone time, I introduced Reader's Theater. I took four Elephant and Piggie books and typed them up into a script. The kids took a lot of their expression cues from the faces of Elephant and Piggie. I kind of wanted to see if they could continue to use the punctuation to add expression to their reading. I helped them the first day or two get used to how the scripts worked and then let them practice. Today we finished our character hats and most of the groups presented.
I have to say, my heart did swell with pride in watching my kids read. Even though I had to still help some kids get through some words, I was so amazed at how well some of them read their parts and the expression they used.

As I read aloud some of his other books too, the kids began to notice similarities between his texts, how the font size and color gave me clues for how to read. We searched for the pigeon in every book. We compared a biography of Mo Willems to Ezra Jack Keats and talked about how the authors were similar and different. We watched some interviews with Mo Willems. Watch this one. I love the ending. Mo Willems tells us that we should read so maybe we will read one of his books, and want to write a story using his characters that he will want to read. My kids loved that thought!

In a time of the school year when I feel like we sometimes hit a wall, Mo Willems helped my kiddos find their voice in reading and in their writing. Each Elephant and Piggie story had a touch of the kids in it. The things they were thinking about came through in the stories. I could hear their voices come through loud and clear in their word choice. Now, during independent reading, the kids pay attention to the punctuation and as their reading voices fill the room, you can hear the expression. Even if it is not a Mo Willems book. ;)

So, I you are stuck in a rut, or feeling like you have reached a dead end. Read some Mo Willems and see where it will take you! ;)

Teachers love Mo Willems too!

Five For Friday

What a long week, such a good one in many ways, but very long in others!
Here is what I have been up to this week:

one:
the weather was perfect this past weekend so we enjoyed being outside... and grilling! We did a big batch of chicken which was perfect on top of salads. I had enough left over to cover lunches for half the week! Love having something that makes life a little easier (and more delicious! ;) ). You can find the recipe here!

two:
I posted a fun St. Patrick's Day parts of speech freebie in my tpt store! Click on the picture to check it out! I'm not going to do much for St. Patricks... trying to keep the week as normal as possible! ;)

three:
Tuesday I had a wonderful ah-ha moment as I try to organize and better connect my independent reading and guided reading time. You can read about that here!

four:
Hello Elephant and Piggie! We have wrapped up our Mo Willems study with our reader's theater performances. There was one pair that was SO precious! The started and ended with a bow, acted out their parts and had great expression. One of the other kids commented that she felt like she was watching a real Elephant and Piggie. What a great compliment! You can read all about our Mo Willems Study here!

five:
So happy to have a chance to rest this weekend and hang out with these three! Ramen and some ice cream was a perfect way to start the weekend!

I'm joining the Five For Friday party over at Doodle Bugs Teaching!

Happy Weekend!

2015 Focus: Moving Forward

Today I had another "ah-ha" moment as I work to bridge my independent reading time and small group time in an effective way. I was conferencing with one of my higher readers. She has no trouble decoding words, and her comprehension is pretty good, but as she read through some difficult words, we struck up a conversation about what some of those words meant. So in her reading journal, I made a column for words and what she thinks they mean so we could keep track. Another high flier was sitting nearby, heard our conversation, and wanted to do the same.  As in, I conference with him about something else and as I am leaving he brings up a word he is not sure about! So of course he got a chart in his journal too! ;)

Lately, I had been organizing my small group plans into two groups, comprehension and reading strategies, but conferencing with those two made me realize that my small group plans could be organized around CAFE, the under-utilized section of wall in my room. I have taken bits of pieces of CAFE and used them in my room, but I have never really used it to address the areas we are working on. I think I will do that more now!

side note: I love the ideas in the Cafe book, but I think the pieces needed to come together in my own way for them to work. I can't follow one system on anything. I take bits and pieces of what I like to work for the needs in our room! :)

Now my little binder has the four headers in my different plans, instead of just the comprehension and reading strategy tabs. I pulled a couple of kids after independent reading today and we worked through how to figure out the meanings of words we were not sure about. (Expanding Vocabulary)

They went through their texts with highlighter tape and highlighted words they didn't know the meaning of. Then as I touched based with each other them and tried to figure out a word, they realized that they could read through and go back to figure out the meaning, use the pictures, or use headers and other clue to get a basic gist of the word. {I love seeing how reading can be full of inquiry too!}

My lesson template is simple, and I kind of wrote the vocab one as we did it, more to have as a reference for later and remember what we have done. You can find that here.

I have to say strategy groups have truly revitalized our reading time. I love that during independent reading I can see the kids using what we have practiced, and now I know exactly where I want to take them next. I love that the plan is centered around the reading needs of the students, not around a text. I feel like they apply the reading strategies and skills more because they realize it is helping them read their text better. They are using a text THEY CHOSE, instead of a book that they don't have a lot of connections too. It is so much more authentic then my reading time in the past.

The buzz of learning in my classroom today was beautiful! It's these kind of moments and realizations that make being a teacher so wonderful. :)

Five For Friday: Happy March!

I had so many good intentions to post this week, but it has been a busy week and I am EXHAUSTED!  Field Trip, Full Moon, Dr. Seuss can all wear a person out! ;)
But 70 degree weather does help my mood drastically. Spring come quickly!

one:
On Wednesday we went to a Marionette Theatre and then went to a nearby park for our lunch! It was almost 80 degrees out! Perfect weather! The kids loved the trip. We saw the show and then got to go backstage and see how they put it on! The kids got to play with some marionette puppets too. It is definitely one that we will do again!

two:
When we got back we had about an hour before it was recess time, so I showed them how to make paper bag puppets and we put on some shows. The kids wanted to do it during dismissal too. Their shows were hilarious! It was funny to hear them use silly voices, and one boy really showed his creative side and became a leader in setting up the shows. It was a great way for them to keep building their expression!

three:
As tired as I was after the field trip, and I really wanted to just lay on the couch,  It was too beautiful a day to keep the boys cooped up inside! They had a ball playing in the yard and then decided that we had to go on a "trip". So we went to the end of the road. Alex kindly pulls the wagon sometimes too, it is so heavy with the two of them! ;) But then at the end Liam wanted out too!

four:
oh yes, this is my life! ;) The boys were drinking water out of the tiny cups, so it lead us to a tea party dinner, dressed as super heroes of course! We have now started soccer season, so that means Will is out late with practices and games. I have to start getting creative with how we will keep busy. Basketball season had a crazy schedule that was all over the place, but soccer is at the end of the year and I am tired. But these little guys are a bundle of energy. Thankfully, super hero costumes and some origami ninja stars saved the night! :)

five:
I know this is the end of Dr. Seuss week, but I finally added this sheet to my candy/food graphing freebie on facebook. Go like my page and check it out! I will be adding more for all the different holidays and months of the year! We are ending out the week with our Dr. Seuss Fun Friday.

Linking up as usual with Doodle Bug Teaching's Five for Friday!
Enjoy your weekend! :)

Currently March

Are we seriously in March already?! Its a new month, which means a new currently! ;) I'm linking up with Farley's Currently!

The boys are going to bed, but Alex starts crying because his ear hurts. So he gets to hang out with me in the living room until Liam falls asleep... thanks to those giggles, I can assume he will probably be okay! ;)

This was such a PERFECT Sunday! From the text this morning that there was lunch for us at church, to the fun-filled afternoon making puppets, going grocery shopping with Alex, then family game time, and we ended with family movie night. I think Big Hero 6 is going to be a new favorite in this house!

Next year, which really means next school year, so life after June. Not really sure what it will all look like. It's going to be different. Will and I are pursuing some different options, but we really don't know how everything is going to pan out. I think about it a lot, but try not to worry. TRY. key word there! ;)

This rainy, cold winter we have had has thrown off my exercise routines... Plus my boys need more time outside and indoor recess needs to stop. Spring needs to get here soon. With all its sunny blue skies. Except maybe not the pollen!

Last week we had two delays and a program, etc. We didn't get much done that I had planned... It threw some of my kiddos off a lot and I am hoping this week is more normal so we can build up our routines again. Delays can be a blessing or a curse!

Spring Break! Still four weeks away! I have lots of plans to get life a little bit more organized. It may or may not require a trip to Ikea. ;) I feel like I spend so much more time organizing life at school, but there are some things around the house that need to get cleaned up so we make better use of our small space!

Here's to a great month!
